"A detailed and intimate portrayal of the relationship between two women."—Hippocampus Magazine“Moving and provocative, The Fourth String charts a profound journey into the heart of another culture. What does it mean to teach and be taught? What does it mean to transform and be transformed? Are teacher and student finally, above all, comrades? Janet Pocorobba's book expertly weaves together memoir, music, and Japanese culture. Through the prism of a long relationship with her shamisen teacher, the author introduces us to many nuances of Japanese cultural and inter-personal precepts. It is an excellent one-foot-in-two -worlds memoir.

This memoir delves into the complex relationship we all have with past mentors/teachers. The author skillfully weaves Japanese culture, tradition, and history with the context of relationships and music.I love this book. It is a page turner: storyline, engaging characters, and beautiful writing.
